Israel named a new ambassador to Jordan on Thursday, the foreign ministry announced, bringing to an end a months-long spat sparked by a deadly shooting.

The foreign ministry named Amir Weissbrod as the new ambassador, the first since July when an Israeli security guard at the embassy in Amman shot dead two Jordanians after an alleged attack.

Israel's then-ambassador Einat Schlein along with the guard returned to Israel after the incident – the guard received a hero's welcome at home, drawing the ire of Jordanians.

Israel has since apologised for the shooting, promising to compensate the victims' families. The embassy was reopened this month.

The incident marked the lowest point in Israeli-Jordanian relations since the two countries signed a peace agreement in 1994.

Egypt is the only other Arab nation with a peace treaty with Israel.
