A US oil worker in Yemen has been detained by Houthi fighters, as the rebels continue their clampdown on suspected opponents.

He was picked up by the rebels after dropping off his children at a school in the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa, Reuters has reported.

The man was working for the Safer oil company and had been living in the country with his Yemeni wife "for many years", colleagues told the news agency.

Other media reported that the man was married to an Ethiopian woman and had converted to Islam.

The US embassy has not confirmed or denied the reports of an American citizen being detained by Houthi authorities.

The Zaydi-Shia Houthi militia has been accused of abducting and torturing other Yemeni opponents, including pro-democracy activists and journalists.

The Houthis captured the Yemeni capital in September 2014 forcing President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi's government to flee south to Aden.

A Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in March 2015, worsening the situation for ordinary Yemenis with 10,000 killed in the past two years of fighting.
