A bomb attack on a bus outside the Bahraini capital of Manama has killed one policeman and wounded eight others on Friday.

The attack, which involved a handmade bomb, took place on the Khalifa bin Salman highway in Jidhafs, the country's interior ministry said in a statement on its website.

"Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances of this premeditated terrorist attack and arrest the group involved," the statement read.

Bahrain, which is a Shia-majority country ruled by a Sunni monarchy, has seen increased unrest and attacks since anti-government protests broke out in 2011.

The government has responded with a controversial crackdown on dissent, which has included the arrests of hundreds of protesters and activists.

Many of those arrested have been acused by Bahrain of being agents of Iran.
