The Israeli military says forces have shot dead a Palestinian they claim had opened fire at a West Bank checkpoint and wounded three people.

Amjad Sukari 35 was killed near the illegal settlement of Beit El.

Sukari, a father of six, was a former detainee at an Israeli prison, sources told The New Arab.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other Palestinian politicians and diplomats regularly pass through the Beit El checkpoint.

The attack is the latest in four months of near-daily clashes.

At least 164 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since October, 32 of them under the age of 18.

Israel says a Palestinian campaign of incitement is fanning the violence, while Palestinians say it is stemming from nearly five decades of Israeli occupation.
