Saudi Arabia has allocated around 12 million riyals, around $3.2 million, to supply meals for Syrian and Somali refugees to break their fasts during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

Arab News
reported that the iftar meals for Ramadan - due to start next week - will be provided to Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, adding that the decision came under the instructions of Saudi King Salman.

Some 30,000 baskets of food items will be distributed in Lebanon, 300,000 in Turkey, 6,000 in Jordan and 30,000 in Somalia, said Saed al-Arabi al-Harthi, an adviser to the interior minister and head of relief committees and campaigns.

"The programme is designed to meet the needs of families during the holy month of Ramadan," Harthi said, adding that the meals would be distributed with the support of national and international relief organisations.

Saudi Arabia has so far spent more than 1.41 billion royals ($370 million) on humanitarian activities for Syrians and Somalis across 176 relief programmes, Harthi explained, stating that this included food supplies, medicine and social, health and educational services.
