Residents in the Saudi capital were left bewildered on Monday after a chimpanzee was seen roaming through the streets of Riyadh.

The simian walked around a residential area in Riyadh as locals attempted to capture the ape using bananas as bait, a video that emerged online showed.

The chimpanzee was eventually led back into its cage after its 30 minutes of freedom, locals said, but not before Saudi social media users - the largest and most active in the region - made a few jokes about the monkey business in Riyadh.
