A video has emerged on Turkish social media of a bikini-clad woman praying on the seaside, sparking debate over her unorthodox act of piety.

The 30-second long clip, which was reportedly shot in the Turkish resort city of Bodrum, was widely discussed on Twitter and local media on Friday.

Islamic law rules that women must wear loose-fitting clothing that covers their whole bodies except for the face and hands while they pray.

Similarly, men must cover themselves from the navel to the knees.

Turkish political analyst Samir Salha told The New Arab that the video was an attack on Turkish social norms and religious customs.

"These kinds of videos, unfortunately, are widely shared and discussed in the media. It is clear that they are aimed at stirring up tensions between the different segments of society," Salha said.

As you can expect many Twitter users have taken to the platform to share their opinions on the controversial clip.
