The Islamic State group issued a statement on US President Donald Trump Tuesday, calling the American leader an "idiot" who does not know about Iraq, Syria or Islam.

The remarks are the extremist group's first official words on the US leader since he entered office.

In a recording released on the Telegram messaging network, IS spokesman Abi al-Hassan al-Muhajer said the US is being "run by an idiot".

"America you have drowned and there is no saviour, and you have become prey for the soldiers of the caliphate in every part of the earth, you are bankrupt and the signs of your demise are evident to every eye," the spokesman said.

"There is no more evidence than the fact that you are being run by an idiot who does not know what Syria or Iraq or Islam is," al-Muhajer said of the US.

The statement was disseminated a day after Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner arrived in Iraq to examine the efforts underway in the battle against IS.

During Trump's campaign to become president, he vowed to destroy IS and tackle the extremist group far more effectively than his predecessor Barack Obama.

Despite the IS group making further territorial losses, observers have argued that the US president's xeophobic rhetoric about Muslims and immigrants has served to polarise the climate in the West, creating a fertile ground for home-grown terror attacks.

This destruction of what IS calls the "grey zone" - the common space in which Muslims and non-Muslims coexist peacefully - has long been a stated aim of the extremist group.

By creating an environment of extremes, IS says it hopes to appeal to those Muslims in the West who are "drowning in oceans of disgrace, being nursed on the milk of humiliation, and being ruled by the vilest of all people".
