French police have opened a terror probe after a suspected parcel bomb was detonated outside a bakery in Lyon on Friday evening, injuring at least 13 people.

Eleven people were taken to hospital, following reports of a "nail bomb", although none are in a life-threatening condition with most said to be suffering injuries to their legs.

One of those injured was an eight-year-old girl, although she is not suffering from serious injuries, French media reported.

A police source told France 24 that a package containing "screws or bolts" exploded on a busy street in Lyon, two days before the country goes to the polls in European Union elections.

Police are looking for a suspect said to be in his 30s and travelling on a mountain bike who was near the scene when the explosion took place at around 5:30pm local time.

"My customers that told me that it was a person on a bike that was wearing a balaclava," a local shop worker told Euronews.

"He threw a bag inside the shop just next to me and it exploded. Luckily no one was killed."

France has been on high alert since a series of terror attacks took place in 2015 and onwards, which left more than 250 dead.

The attacks were carried out by sympathisers of the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda.
