Cairo has been battling Sinai-based insurgents for years, but launched a major military operation in February.

The Egyptian regime killed 12 gunmen in a shootout in the north of the Sinai Peninsula, where the Islamic State group operates, a government source said Sunday.

Egypt has been waging a major military operation against Sinai insurgents since February, with scores on both sides killed in raids and fighting.

The deadly exchange of fire took place in the coastal city of El-Arish after the authorities received information that militants were hiding in the area.

Guns, ammunition and explosive devices were discovered at the scene, the source said.

No casualties among security forces were reported.

Egypt has been battling militants for years but the Sinai-based insurgency gained strength after the 2013 overthrow of the country's first elected president, the Islamist Mohamed Morsi.

The military says that over 250 suspected jihadis and at least 35 soldiers have been killed in its "Sinai 2018" operation.
