Video shows Egyptian soldiers 'executing' Sinai detainee

Footage reportedly showing Egyptian forces in Sinai executing an unarmed, blindfolded young man has emerged, according to Turkish-based al-Sharq TV.

The leaked video, broadcast on Monday by the outlet affiliated to the banned Muslim Brotherhood, allegedly shows an extrajudicial killing being carried out by the Egyptian military.

The short video clip appears to show an Egyptian soldier shooting a detained local man lying on the ground after he is promised that he will not be killed.

"Cover him, cover him," a voice off camera tells a soldier, who places a sheet over the man - described as a "child" by the channel.

"Shut your eyes, shut your eyes. Don't worry boy, your dad will come and get you," the off-camera voice tells the detainee before he is shot several times.

"Oh, mother!" the man is heard saying in a Bedouin accent as he is killed.

The New Arab could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.

The incident is the latest to apparently document extrajudicial killings being carried out by the Egyptian military in the troubled Sinai province.

Last April, leaked footage reportedly showed two blindfolded detainees being similarly executed.

Human Rights Watch has accused Cairo of extrajudicially executing suspected militants during counterterrorism operations in Sinai against an affiliate of the Islamic State group.

Egypt has been battling Islamic State group-linked militants in Sinai for years.

The insurgency gathered steam and grew deadlier after the 2013 ousting by the military, then led by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, of Mohammed Morsi, an Islamist president.

Last month, Sisi promised to end military operations against jihadists in the Sinai Peninsula "as soon as possible".

More than 200 jihadists and at least 33 government troops have been killed since 9 February, when Egypt launched operation "Sinai 2018" against the insurgency, according to official figures.
