An Israeli civilian shot a Palestinian man who allegedly pulled out a screwdriver and tried to stab him, according to Israeli police.

Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the incident occured near the Mishor Adumim settlement. The wounded Palestinian, who was shot in the head according to the Times of Israel, was taken to hospital in serious condition.

There has been an uptick in violence between Israelis and Palestinians since US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December.

Trump's announcement broke with decades of US policy that the city's status would be decided in any future negotiations between Israelis and the Palestinians.

Stabbings and car-ramming have been used since the December announcement.

Israeli forces have also shot dead more than 30 unarmed Palestinian protesters who began the Great March of Return demonstrations on 30 March. Israel has come under mounting criticism for shooting dead unarmed Palestinian civilians protesting peacefully.

Demonstrators are demanding the right of return for refugees. The protests are planned to last six weeks up until Nakhba Day, the anniversary of Israel's establishment that displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

Rights groups have harshly criticised Israeli soldiers' actions, saying they are shooting at Palestinian protesters who pose no security threat.
