Israeli forces had apparently entered the city to search for a Palestinian who stabbed and killed an Israeli settler near the major West Bank settlement of Ariel on Monday.

Israeli armed forces shot and killed a Palestinian on Tuesday during a raid in the northern occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry said.

A medical source named the dead person as Khaled Tayeh, a man in his 20s who had been shot in the chest.

Israeli forces had apparently entered the city to search for a Palestinian who stabbed and killed an Israeli settler near the major West Bank settlement of Ariel on Monday.

Several dozen Palestinians were wounded in the clashes.

The identity of the dead man did not match that of the suspect given by Israeli authorities as the suspect.

Earlier on Tuesday several hundred people gathered for the funeral of Itamar Ben Gal, the 29-year-old settler killed outside Ariel.

Israel's army had sectioned off the Ariel settlement and set up extensive checkpoints along Route 5 following the killing.

Israeli forces earlier on Tuesday shot dead a Hamas militant suspected of murdering a settler in Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.

In January, Rabbi Raziel Shevah, 35, was killed in a drive-by shooting near his home in an unauthorised settlement outpost near the West Bank city of Nablus

Tensions have risen since US President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December.

At least 22 Palestinians and two Israelis have died since the announcement.

All Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are deemed illegal under international law and viewed as a major obstacle to peace.
