Several suspects were arrested in Iran for "espionage," but authorities did not disclose who or how many.

Tehran's prosecutor announced on Saturday that authorities have arrested a number of suspects over espionage charges, reported the pro-government Tasnim News.

The suspects were "collecting some classified information from strategic areas," according to the news report, which quoted state prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi.

It is unclear who or how many suspects were detained.

Iran occasionally announces the arrest and conviction of people on espionage charges for foreign countries, particularly the US and Israel.

In 2015, the Washington Post's Tehran bureau chief Jason Rezaian was convicted of espionage in a closed door trial. He was later freed in January 2016, following major international campaigns for his release.
