Iraq sentences German woman to death for belonging to IS
A German national has been sentenced to death by an Iraqi court for her connections to the Islamic State group.

An Iraqi court on Sunday condemned a German woman to death by hanging after finding her guilty of belonging to the Islamic State group.

The German national, who is of Moroccan origin, was sentenced for providing "logistical support and helping the terrorist group to carry out crimes", said Abdel Settar Bayraqdar, a spokesman for the court.

In September 2017, an Iraqi court sentenced a Russian man to death by hanging after finding him guilty of fighting for IS.

In the same month, Iraqi authorities started criminal proceedings against a German teenager who was captured after joining the Islamic State group in Iraq.

Linda Wenzel, 16, was formally charged along with three other German women following their capture during the fall of Mosul in July, German newspaper Der Spiegel reported.

All four women could face the death penalty if found guilty of belonging to the militant group.

Iraq was heavily criticised by Stockholm for the execution of a Swedish-Iraqi dual national in December during a mass hanging.
