Qatar has warned its citizens against travelling to Egypt amid a Saudi-led embargo on Doha in effect since June.

Qatar's foreign ministry made the announcement on Friday in a statement carried by the state-run Qatar News Agency.

"This warning is because of the security measures imposed by the Egyptian authorities against the Qataris when entering Egypt," the statement said.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates cut diplomatic ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing Doha of supporting extremism - charges the emirate has denied.

Riyadh and its allies have expelled Qatari citizens and closed land and maritime borders while also suspending air links with Doha.

Qatari daily al-Sharq reported on Wednesday that a Qatari university student was denied a visa this week by Egyptian authorities, preventing him from attending his final exams at Cairo University.

In July, Egypt ended visas on arrival for Qatari citizens.

Egyptian authorities said at the time that the measure would not include spouses of Egyptians or university students who would be granted tourist visas on arrival.
