More than 140 Palestinian children detained by Israel in July

Nearly 1,000 Palestinians including 144 children were detained by Israeli forces across Palestine in July alone, raising the number of Palestinians in Israeli prisons to 6,400.

A joint report by the Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS), al-Mezan Centre for Human Rights, Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association and the Palestinian Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs, found that last month, 880 Palestinians were arrested by Israel. This included 144 children and 18 women.

Just under half of the detentions took place in East Jerusalem and the greater Jerusalem district.

Among the detentions were 12 members of the Palestinian Legislative Council – one of whom was considered to be an "illegal militant".

The number of arrests that took place from highest to lowest are: Jerusalem - 425 detentions, Hebron - 120 detentions, Nablus - 85 detentions, Jenin - 49 detentions, Qalqiliya - 47 detentions, Bethlehem - 45 detentions, Ramallah - 37 detentions, Tulkarem - 36 detentions, Tubas - 14 detentions, Salfit - 10 detentions, Jericho - 10 detentions, Gaza Strip - two detentions.
