Dozens of university professors held a protest outside the headquarters of the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education in Algiers, voicing their anger against rising violence in universities.

The professors stood in front of the ministry on Saturday, condemning the increasing cases of abuse in Algerian university campuses, and demanding their lives be protected.

The protests were instigated after law professor Professor Karoui Bachir Serhan was found dead at the University of Khemis Miliana. He had been murdered by two students who had hit him on the head with a hammer.

It is unknown why Serhan was killed, but all that is currently known is that the suspects are two brothers, one 18-years old and the other, 19.

After Serhan was killed, Algerian academics released a joint status condemning his killing, saying he was killed as a result of the "indifference, self-denial, self-sacrifice, impunity, irresponsibility and the trivialisation of murderous violence in Algerian universities."
