Three workers were killed and several others injured following an "incident" at a Qatari building site this week, according to Qatar News Agency.

The Qatari defence ministry "stressed its commitment to abide by the highest safety standards in all its facilities".

Human rights groups have long claimed that labour conditions and a lack of health and safety at building sites in Qatar - which will be hosting the 2022 football World Cup - leave workers in perilious situations.

Doha has responded with a series of reforms aimed at improving working practices and employee safety.

In December, Qatari officials introduced a new contract-based system for foreign workers, replacing the controversial Kafala system.

Doha says it says will give more protection to workers and safeguard their rights.
