A two-year-old Saudi child and a Pakistani expat were killed and ten others were injured earlier this week when a gunman opened fire at crowds of people in the al-Mansourah district of the eastern al-Qatif province, the Saudi Interior Ministry announced on Friday.

"Workers were shot at by terrorist elements from the neighbourhood to obstruct the project and protect abandoned houses used as their hideout to kidnap citizens and religious men," al-Turki said.

The spokesman said that the attackers had soght to obstruct the construction work that was going on in an area where militants had based themselves.

"When security forces arrived at the site to deal with the attacks, the terrorists fired indiscriminately and heavily at passers-by and security men, killing a two-year-old Saudi national and a Pakistani national," the spokesperson said.

"Ten people, including six Saudis, were injured. A Saudi woman and her two children were also injured. The expatriates who needed medical treatment are two Pakistanis, one Sudanese and one Indian who is in critical condition. The four security personnel were slightly injured."

The construction company's machines were also targeted by the attackers, who threw explosives at the site and houses nearby.
