The Israeli army arrested a Palestinian lawmaker on Wednesday when conducting dawn raids in the West Bank, according to a statement by the Palestinian Prisoners' Society.

Ahmad Attoun was detained by the Israeli army in the early hours of Wednesday, after his home was raided in Al-Bireh.

He is the 13th Palestinian parliamentarian to be captured by Israel.

During his arrest, his house was searched "brutally" and the Israeli army destroyed much of his furniture, according to the Palestinian Asra Media Office.

The 52-year-old lawmaker is a member of the Change and Reform bloc in the Palestinian Legislative Council, which has links to the Hamas movement. He has spent a total of 12 years in jail, with the last occurrence being in 2013, after he was held in administrative detention without being trialled or charged for nearly two years.

The arrest comes days after Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman made it clear that the Tel Aviv is not looking to “quarrel” with Hamas, after the group accused Israel of assassinating senior Hamas official Mazen Faqha.

Earlier this month, Israeli forces carried out various raids across the West Bank, arresting Palestinian children as young as 12 without giving an immediate explanation.
