Iran demands that US account for shooting of Iranian-American

Tehran has sent Washington a memo to protest the death of an unarmed Iranian-American who was shot by US Park Police after a short chase in Virginia last month.

Bijan Ghaisar, 25, succumbed to his wounds on November 27 - 10 days after he was shot.

A report published on Monday by the official IRNA news agency said Iran's Foreign Ministry delivered the memo to the Swiss envoy in Tehran, who looks after US interests in Iran.

Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said the memo demanded that Washington officials elaborate on the "regretful and illegal" incident, pursue prosecution of suspects and compensate the victim's family for their loss.

Ghaisar was pursued by police after he allegedly fled the scene of a car accident. The fatal shooting was captured by the in-car video camera of a Fairfax County officer who had joined the pursuit.

On Monday, Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin C. Roessler Jr. called for the footage to be made public as soon as the FBI is done with its review of the officers involved.

Two US Park Police officers have been placed on administrative leave since Ghaisar's shooting.
