A masked man, who opened fire at a German multiplex cinema on Thursday, wounding several people, was shot dead.

Public broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk and Bild daily said that at least 25 people were hurt when the man fired shots and then barricaded himself in the cinema in the western town of Viernheim.

German police spokesperson, Christiane Kobus, confirmed the "unclear threat situation".

Norbert Schaetzle, a spokesman for police in the nearby city of Mannheim, said the police force there was not directly involved in the incident, but had sent officers to support their colleagues in the town.
