Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said he is "sad" that former President George W Bush did not vote for him.

Trump was hoping for the backing from the former Republican president in his race against Democrat Hillary Clinton to the White House.

But the property magnet's hard-hitting campaign against's Bush's Jeb during the Republican Party primary is said to have soured the relationship with the president who led the country between 2000 and 2008.

It now appears that George W Bush didn't cast his vote for Trump, but he also didn't back his Democrat rival.

"I think it's sad," Trump said. "I think it's sad, you know. When I see George Bush do that, and look I was very critical of him for getting us into Iraq - which was obviously a horrible decision - and getting out the way Obama got us out was a horrible way to get out too - the combination. I don't think it has any impact, frankly. I think it has no impact."

An aide on Tuesday said that Bush voted for "none of the above", after he has previously signaled that he intended to sit out the race.

"President and Mrs. Bush voted 'None of the Above' for president, and for Republican candidates on the rest of the ballot," Bush personal aide Freddy Ford told AFP.

George W Bush's father George H.W. has privately told friends he would vote for Clinton in the election.

Other veteran Republicans have also refused to vote for Trump, after criticism for racist and sexist comments, maverick behavior, and allegations of sexual assault.
