Eleven shot dead in South Sudan football match massacre

Two separate massacres over the weekend in South Sudan's capital Juba has left up to 12 people dead and another 27 injured.

Police said that nine people were killed and 11 injured, when a gunman opened fire on a group of people watching a football match in Gure, a suburb of Juba, on Saturday night.

"The investigation is going on," said Daniel Justin, a spokesperson for South Sudanese police.

He said that a motive for the attack has not been found, but some local media reports suggest the massacre happened following an argument between rival football fans. Other media reports said 11 people died in the attack.

In another incident near Juba, at least one person was killed and ten more injured when a man threw a grenade at crowds in a party, according to The National Courier .

The injured were rushed to Juba Teaching Hospital, where they were treated for shrapnel wounds, Eye Radio said.

It is not known if the two attacks were linked and no arests have been made in relation to the two incidents

But many believe it could be linked to July's outbreak of violence between SPLM-IG fighters loyal to President Salva Kiir and rebel soldiers backing his rival, Riek Machar.

The country has a large number of weapons available on the streets as a result of the civil war which has been on-going since December 2013.
