Nine people were killed and 24 injured in northeast Nigeria on Saturday morning, after two bombs were detonated by suicide bombers driving motorised rickshaws.

The Nigeria Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported the twin attacks targeted a petrol station and the entrance to a refugee camp in the city of Maiduguru, Borno state.

"Two suicide bombers riding in motorised rickshaws this morning detonated their explosives 10 minutes apart, with one of them targeting the Bakassi IDP (internally displaced persons) camp on the outskirts of the city," Mohammed Kanar, a spokesperson for NEMA, said.

NEMA tweeted that the bombs exploded near the Bakadassi refugee camp and near an Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation station.

Nobody had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of publication.

There have been a number of suicide bombings in Maiduguru in recent months that have been attributed to Boko Haram, the Nigerian islamist terrorist group with links to Islamic State.

On October 12, a car bomb exploded near the Muna garage in the city, killing eight people.
