A Palestinian Intelligence officer from Abu Dis, a town in Jerusalem governorate, attacked and wounded an Israeli soldier on Thursday before getting shot dead by Israeli forces, according to Israeli and witness reports.

The incident occurred at the village of Hizmeh, north of Jerusalem.

A witness told al-Araby al-Jadeed that Mazen Oraiba "was riding in a cab, got out of the car and opened fire on a group of Israeli soldiers, wounding one of them, before the soldiers shot at him, seriously wounding him," pointing out that the man "died at the scene after he was left to bleed without being offered any treatment."

Israeli sources also said that Oraiba was killed, while the Israeli soldier sustained moderate wounds.

Israeli daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that Oraiba was a Palestinian Intelligence officer and that a Palestinian Israeli bystander was also wounded when Israeli forces opened fire at Oraiba, according to Safa, a Palestinian news agency.

Israeli forces cordoned the entire area immediately after the incident and prevented Palestinian ambulance crews from reaching the injured Palestinian man, while Israeli medical emergency response services were allowed to come to the aide of the wounded soldier.

Earlier on Thursday, Israeli forces demolished the home of a Palestinian they said masterminded the shooting of a Jewish settler couple in the northern West Bank.

The wave of violence began early in October triggered by several events including the storming of the al-Aqsa Mosque compound by Israeli soldiers in September.
