Despite having one of the highest literacy and education rates in the Middle East, Iran also suffers from an appalling lack of free speech.

This year, Iran moved up one position in the World Press Freeom Index from 165 to 164. But, nevertheless, Tehran remains one of the biggest jailers of journalists and activists who are regularly arrested and placed in detention without charge.

Narges Mohammadi was sentenced to ten years in prison for "forming an illegal group". Its name? The Centre for Human Rights Defenders.

Citizen-journalists active on social media are now at the centre of battles for freely-reported news and information and for political change in Iran.
