Israel's army on Wednesday chastised Iran for allegedly providing hundreds of millions of dollars to powerful Lebanese movement Hizballah, saying the funds could have instead bought subscriptions to dating app Tinder for two million years.

"Iran annually funnels $1 billion to Hezbollah in Lebanon for terror - including attack tunnels into #Israel. This money is equivalent to: 33,333,333 months of @Tinder subscriptions. Let that sink in. #CondemnTheTunnels," the Israeli military wrote in a Tweet from its official account.

Israel announced on Tuesday that it had discovered alleged Hizballah tunnels infiltrating its territory from Lebanon and launched an operation to destroy them, but Lebanon has disputed claims amid accusations Netanyahu is trying to distract from his legal problems.

"Iran annually funnels $1 billion to Hezbollah in Lebanon for terror - including attack tunnels into #Israel. This money is equivalent to: 561,797,752 cans of @Coke. Let that sink in. #CondemnTheTunnels," the IDF wrote in a series of bizarre tweets.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that Hizballah, like Hamas in the Gaza Strip, was acting on behalf of its patron Iran.

Domestic political opponents have accused the embattled prime minister of using the much-publicised tunnel operations to deflect attention from a corruption investigation and chaos within his ruling coalition.

Israel receives around $3 billion a year from the United States in military aid, and is the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign assistance since World War II.

The largest ever US military aid package to Israel - worth $38 billion over a period of ten years - entered into force in October.

The annual US aid package to Israel is the equivalent of hiring 54,000 additional teachers, 69,000 firefighters, or 21,000 doctors a year in America, and three times the Tinder Gold Iran's aid to Hizballah would buy each year.
