A confrontation between a Jordanian MP and an Israeli MK which caused bursts of laughter across social media was called off after Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu forced the cancellation.

Jordanian MP Yehiya al-Saoud called on controversial Israeli MK Oren Hazan to a confrontation at the Israeli border amid a rise in tensions in Jordanian and Israeli relations.

Al-Saoud challenged Hazan to a duel at the Jordanian Israeli border on Allenby Bridge border crossing to take place on Wednesday morning.

"The shoe of a Palestinian child is more honourable than this criminal and his entire entity," al-Saoud said.

"The shoe of any Arab and Muslim is better than him and his bastardised entity, which has no origin and religion."

Typically, Hazan was quick to accept. He even got a haircut for the occasion.

An Arabic hashtag which translates to "We are all Yehiya al-Saoud" emerged and the jokes did not stop rolling.

Though, some were less than pleased:

After the confrontation was called off, al-Saoud arrived at the border and spoke to the media. His tone this time seemed slightly more mellow.

"I went down to the bridge today but after I arrived, I received a letter of peace from Hazan between the Israeli and Jordanian people," he said.
