A former adult film star who recently converted to Judaism has started posting a series of Islamophobic tweets to a Twitter following of more than 670,000.

Jenna Jameson has written and retweeted a large number of messages that project anti-Muslim sentiments, sparking numerous complaints.

In one of her tweets, the 42-year-old said that Islam "promotes child rape, female genital mutilation, butchering non believers and polygamy".

In response to another tweet, one fan replied: "i think you should replace @megynkelly [sic]", referring to the conservative ex-Fox News anchor who has been routinely criticised for her anti-Islamic statements.

"Jameson is a classic example of someone who believes in 'them and us'," wrote Tell Mama, an anti-hate speech organisation, in a blog.

"Sadly, she conflates 'them' with all Muslims and not with cults like Islamic State who have also murdered tens of thousands of Muslims in their wake."

Jameson, born Jenna Marie Massoli, converted to rabbinical Judaism on November 11, 2016 after she became engaged to the Israeli jewellery dealer, Lior Bitton.

Bitton was convicted of insurance fraud in 2011 for having falsely reported the theft of a $99,000 diamond in the United States before flying out to Israel.

Jameson, who was raised a Catholic, has always claimed to be "extremely" religious.

"I love being able to teach my children what it means to just believe and have the strength of faith... I've always been extremely Catholic," Jameson told US TV host Larry King in 2013.

"[But] I don't think that you have to take the Bible literally."
