Every year, on March 8, I make a point to read about the incredible women who have contributed to humanity. This year, I wanted to look at the equally extraordinary stories

of ordinary women from across the world, so I asked al-Araby al-Jadeed's female readers what their biggest achievement has been to date.

Over the past few days, al-Araby collected testimonies from women across the Arab world, and further afield, who wrote down their biggest personal achievement on a piece of paper and photographed themselves holding it.

These ranged from women telling us how they completed their higher education despite obstacles, or raised a family alone. All the women who responded to this campaign have tackled their personal challenges with unquestionable strength and courage. Here are some of our favourite admirable achievements.

Many women we talked to claimed not to have an achievement of which they were proud. But after a bit of a talk, they were more happy to share their accomplishments.

Many have found happiness by contributing to society.

This campaign has taught me so much about the wonderful women surrounding us. They are beautiful, smart, inspiring, and special in their own way. The campaign #BecauseICan has become my own favourite achievement - so far!

#BecauseICan received the support of Filmmaker Ala Hamdan, Company owner Ali Dahmash, and the brilliant author and professor Hamid Dabashi, who each contributed to help this campaign reach as many women as possible.
