UN says 1325 civilians killed in Iraq in August
Violence and armed conflict in Iraq killed more than 1,300 people and injured over 1,800 others last month, said the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) late Wednesday.

There was a steady increase in the number of casualties in Iraq last month, according to new figures released by the UN on 1 September.
More than 1,300 people were killed and 1,800 injured in August said the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict. Out of these figures 585 civilians were killed, and 1,103 civilians injured.
Baghdad was the worst affected governorate, with 1,069 civilian casualties, of which 318 were killed and 751 injured.
"Diyala suffered 108 killed and 162 injured; Ninewa 69 killed and 3 injured; Salah al-Din 23 killed and 13 injured and Kirkuk 17 killed and 15 injured," said the report.
The conflict, however, had made it difficult to verify actual casualty numbers, said UNAMI.
It also said it "received, without being able to verify, reports of large numbers of casualties along with unknown numbers of persons who have died from secondary effects of violence after having fled their homes due to exposure to the elements, lack of water, food, medicines and health care".
In this case, the report said, the number have to be considered an "absolute minimum".
