A series of air raids on the Damascus suburb of Douma has killed at least 10 dead according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

It is believed that helicoptors dropped barrel bombs on the neighbourhood, and footage shows smoke billowing from the area and massive destruction on the streets.

Many more have been left critically injured, including children, while other residents are missing under rubble.

The injured were rushed to packed hospitals many caked in debris and dust.

Although rebel fighters are positioned in Douma, many civilians remain in the neighbourhood.

The area has been under sustained attack by the regime and a heavy bombardment by regime aircraft and rockets in early June killed 24 people, including five children.

The attack coinciding with a visit from the UN's Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura and a rebel rocket attack on Damascus on the same day left nine people dead.

In the north west, regime bombing of the town of Ihsam killed another 18 people including four members of the same family.

Since rebels launched an offensive in Daraa province last Thursday the regime had stepped up air raids in the south of the country and the Damascus suburbs.

In one day, the regime launched over 120 air raids on rebel-held Idlib province.

Ahmad al-Masalmeh, an activist, told al-Araby al-Jadeed Arabic that barrel bombs Daraa city, and other parts of the province, while the town of Basr al-Harir was shelled by the army.

After days of relative quiet in Daraa, the rebel offensive has resumed with the rebels claiming that shelling had killed dozens of Syrian troops.
